A vital part of studying Visual Arts is seeing and engaging with artworks in real life, so we make it a priority to take all of the students from grades 6-12 to exhibitions around Shanghai. Enjoy the video! music by Ratatat.
This year, we held our Grade 12 Exhibiton at M50 in a beautiful 2 story gallery space, that essentially allowed every student in Grade 12 to have their own wall of the gallery. The show was attended by hundreds of visitors, not just teachers and students, as it was during the White Lights weekend at the M50 (Moganshan) Art District in Shanghai. Students volunteered to open and close the gallery all weekend, so it was truly a professional show, open to the public. The students' work was original and very high quality. I'm so proud of what they have achieved, and I feel honored to have been a part of it all. Grade 12 students, if you're reading this, I'm so proud of you and I wish you all the best in your future adventures! Stay in touch!
Welcome back to a new school year! The construction team was busy over the summer... Look at the changes I designed for our Art Department! I spent a lot of time last year making drawings and talking with builders to make improvements to our rooms, and I'm very pleased with the changes we've made. We have new beautiful large tables, a clean, slip-proof floor, lots of new shelving for storing artwork and supplies, and a classroom that has shifted the center from one end of the classroom, to the center, making it more student focused. We have at least 3 student computers in each classroom, including an iMac, and a set of iPads available to be used for research and manipulation of images. I can't wait to get started working in these rooms!
Students and Colleagues,
Thank you immensely for the support from the Music Department, the Admin Staff, and Senior Leadership Team at SUIS Gubei that helped to make the DP Arts Exhibition such a success. The food, wine, and music was fantastic, and a perfect complement to the outstanding artworks. I am so proud of what our students are capable of and what they have accomplished, and this event truly highlights this.
I made a video to remember the exhibition, please enjoy!
March 16th is the long awaited SUIS Gubei IB Diploma Arts Exhibition! The event will be open to parents, friends, students and teachers of G12 SUIS Gubei students at a prestigious gallery in the Creative Hub of M50, Shanghai.
This exhibition will feature the best Artwork from our graduating students, as well as selected pieces from Grade 11 students. We will also feature some of the talented musicians from Grade 12.
It is a very exciting to see such amazing art by such talented students. I look forward to celebrating their success.
I'm in Hong Kong for 3 days for IB Visual Arts Teacher Training. The keynote speaker was Kasey Wong, a Hong Kong Artist that is doing some fantastic, creative work, especially exploring "mobile architecture," politics, and the role of the artist. One of my favorite things he said was that engineers will look his work and criticize it, saying that isn't doesn't apply to everyone and it doesn't solve the problems. Wong says, "Art doesn't solve problems. It brings out the problems and lets you feel the gravity."
In the Visual Arts Category 3 Workshop that I'm attending, our focus will be on Assessment, Emerging Media, clarifying questions and sharing resources.
Here we go! Welcome back, we've got another great year ahead of us. Have you been to check out any of the art around Shanghai lately? Lots of great exhibitions. The Art Fair just ended, but there's a lot of great stuff still to see: Lots of great Photography exhibitions in galleries around the city, THE RAIN ROOM (must experience this one) at the Yuz Museum, and lots more. Check out Smart Shanghai for the most up to date information on what's happening in Art in Shanghai.
Don't you love the freedom that comes with summer? Of course you can just let the days go by, relaxing by the pool or in front of the TV, or whatever you choose. But really it's the best chance to delve into something that really matters to you.. Projects! Get good at something! Try something new! Read some good books! Don't let the summer pass you by without finishing at least one project that matters to you.
On that note, one of my projects this summer is getting the art department website back up and running. I'm changing the look and functionality of it, so stay tuned!
