Grade 6 Project Gallery
Observation & Color
In this unit, we'll complete observational studies looking at live and photographed insects, exploring shape, line and colour, as well as emotions (excitement, fear, curiosity) inspired by looking at insects. We will talk about and practice using the primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary and analogous colours, applying the colour schemes in a variety of media to our insect studies. We’ll make “creative colour wheels” using any media each of us chooses, exploring colour in the real world. Everyone will research an expressionist artist and work together in class to learn how to design an artist research page. We'll discuss how the expressionists used colour to portray emotion. We'll also practice painting techniques, imitating, learn about how the colours we use can express emotion, and finally create A3 size insect paintings that express our individual feelings about insects.

Analogous Insects inspired by artwork of Paul Klee
These artworks were created by Grade 6 students. They learned about line, shape and colour found in insects and created these compositions inspired by the artwork of Paul Klee. Paul Klee used analogous and complementary colours to created his paintings. He was obsessed with line, colour, shape and how they overlap, contrast and fit together.
Weaving
We’ll learn many forms of weaving, look at textiles and patterns in weaving across different cultures. We'll design paper weavings, finger weavings, and finally we’ll create our own looms out of cardboard and paper plates. We'll experiment creating textiles using many different forms materials, including yarn, string, and found/recycled cloth. Working in teams, we'll create Hoola Hoop Weavings using recycled clothing, plastic bags, beads... and they will hang colourfully around the school!
Shadow PuppetsWe’ll study traditional Chinese paper cutting techniques and designs, to create our own creative zodiac signs. We’ll develop paper cutting craft knife skills through experimentation, study positive and negative space and consider how our work should be displayed. We’ll engage with a range of images and artefacts from different contexts, recognise the varied characteristics of different cultures and use and them to inform their creation of shadow puppet characters. We’ll develop prior-learned skills in the creation of our designs. Finally, we’ll work through a structured design process, conceptualizing and creating ‘sets’ for shadow puppets plays.

Trash to Treasure In this unit, we’ll focus on reusing/recycling literally turning trash into artwork. We’ll learn numerous techniques working in 3D. We will study “Found Art” and “Trash Art” movements, analysing and evaluating artworks from each movement. Then, we’ll create a detailed planning page for their treasure design. Finally, we’ll create the final pieces. Artists include: Duchamp, Koons, Rauschenberg and others.
