2013 Arts & Music Festival - Student Review
Arts Festival Experience by Joanna Yuan
James, Kevin and I were very passionate about this art performance. In the preparation section, we are the group that spent the longest time on mixing paints and result in 18 different bottles sizes of paints. Since this is the last year of our high school and we are very precious about the limited time left for us to spend with each other. Some of us have been studying in SUIS for 7 years so we have a very close connection with SUIS. In order to commemorate the wonderful time we spent in this place, we made up our mind to create a piece with SUIS logo on but emphasis on freedom of creativity. I suggested create an atmosphere of nebula. There was only a SUIS logo we drew on the 3x1meter canvas. When the music of ‘Cold duck time’ started, intense I felt was gone, and everyone just paint with the beat and melody of the music. We were so into the performance, and went a bit crazy, out of blue two guys had a fight and they just poured the paint on the paint with cheers and applause. It was the first time I had the connection with freedom of art, and that was just the most amazing night in my entire high school!

A school gym, not the usual location for a festival of such grand allure, however the lights and atmosphere were great. Our teacher decorated the table and turn off the light, so that the audience can focus on the performance better. Furthermore, the small stalls set at the back of the stage are also suitable for the audience to watch long performance. In addition, the food, coffee and alcohol provided by the parents were a fantastic addition that improved the overall atmosphere to make the art festival more professional. Although our teachers were so happy that so many people come, the gym was kind of small to hold such large amount.
The music is very soft and the performance of both music and art department is perfect, especially the performance from music department, it was very professional and beautiful. In fact, our art department also had amazing performance by Team JJK (member: James, Joanna and Kevin). The expression and the final result looks unique and dramatic! However, perhaps they should control the movement range to avoid the paints get on others things.

During the exhibition, we were able to show to a wider audience and I think this is curial for an artist to gain more recognition. It gave a great sense of honor when the audience were looking at our works and giving their opinion and suggestions. No matter their opinion good or bad, I took it as a chance to learn and improve and get more potential ideas for my future works.
After the exhibition we had to do a performance in front of the entire audience along with the Ib and IGCSE musicials. The idea was to produce an artwork by following the flow of the music. Our group 'JJK' decided to produce an art piece with the logo of our school.
It was the first time I had ever done performance art. I realized that the most important part is not the final piece but the process of doing it.

On the 3rd April, our school had our first art show night and it was amazing! At first 'Art Performance' sounds unfamiliar to me and I am scared. Not only because I don't know what to do or paint but also due to the time limitations. During the IB Visual Arts course I prefer to make art work in very small particular details which costs much time and energy thus the Art Performance really gave me a lot of worry.
After discussing with my partner, Blair, we decided to paint the song 'Hit me like a Man', a heavy song which is both dark and lively, performed by Monna Chiyo and the school band. We planned to continue my 'Jackson Pollock' style to drip and splatter paint considering the 'rock' and wild feelings. It was great to combine this with graffiti and have a real rebellious theme.
Overall, the night was awesome! My friends are all great that night, they all performed fantastically and really enjoyed it! Paint, rhythm along with friends will be unforgettable, the best experience ever! EXPERIENCE OF COLOUR, MOOD, MUSIC, TO TAKE RISKS, TO BE BRAVE.
To friends and teachers, I feel so lucky to meet all of you :)

I never experienced performance Art before and I enjoyed by first one on April 3rd. Being the first group on stage, Anson and I were extremely nervous when we were preparing. However, when we actually stood up on that stage, on that wooden and shaky floor, I felt unpredictably relaxed! Holding the brushes and listening to the ups and downs of 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. I improvised with the spreading of my inspiration.
Although, there was floors and imperfections such as the weak background peeling off, Anson, who serves as the best partner, felt satisfied with our ending of our IB Art with a passionate, elegant and entertaining event.

The several past months have witnessed the improvement of all IB Grade 12 Art students. Besides the amazing art works we produced over the past 2 years, the ceremony of both the art and music departments was also really successful.
During this ceremony, Owen and I took the leap to create the artwork on canvas which was suspended on a wall, along to music performed by our school, extremely talented musicians. Although, our artwork was a little but "shy" it is that we created an art work in public. I will remember that moment forever!
The most attractive part of the performance was that of 'JJK'. The colourful image and the SUIS logo, obtained the appreciation of our principle, not to mention the amazing musical performances.
Above all, I hope that I can keep the perseverance of working on art to graduate university.

Dimmed lights. A cavernous hall. Displays decorating the walls - colorful, monotonous, cheerful, lugubrious. The strains of music permeating the room. The smell of food and wine. The sounds of laughter and conversation. Excitement in the air. The Art festival was all these things and more.
It was the exhilaration of complete freedom in a personally unfamiliar media. It was paint specks and dripping water and smooth brushstrokes and mingling colors. It was acting on the spur of the moment - deciding what to paint, where to paint it, and in which color. It was standing on the stage, facing a blank canvas, feeling the spotlight hot against your skin, sensing hundreds of eyes on your back… and then walking down, hearing the congratulations, and turning your head to admire what you’d just done.
