“Each thing has its word, but the word has become a thing by itself. Why shouldn't I find it? Why can't a tree be called Pluplusch, and Pluplubasch when it has been raining?” -Hugo Ball

Typography
During this project we’ll learn how text interacts with images, how text can be used to create images, and how text itself can be art. We will explore how text is used to convey ideas visually and through the meaning of the text itself, looking at typography from many different cultures. We’ll create an image using only text, studying how meaning is conveyed through font. Then we will use photography to find letters within the school environment. Next, we’ll create an ornate letter design. We’ll create stencils, talking about positive and negative space, using spray paint to “write” a poem using all students’ letters. Next, we will use wool and cardboard to create a block for printing, making a series of prints that explore colour principles and layering. Finally, we’ll refine our letter designs, carving the designs into linoleum blocks to create linocut prints.
