World Pattern Project: China

The world pattern project is a collaborative project with students all over the world. Grade 8 Students at SUIS worked together to investigate different questions about Chinese Pattern and Printmaking Processes. They made some really excellent videos to answer their questions and to document their learning processes. Please browse the videos below and leave comments for us. Enjoy!

Op Art Mosaic

We’ll study the Op Art Movement and taking a closer look at colour relationships, we’ll experiment with techniques for creating illusion with pencil, chalk and oil pastel. Drawing on previously learned techniques creating patterns, we’ll design individual illusions drawings. Students will work in group to design a motif, then will work together to create a mosaic piece that will run the length of the art corridor in the school.

Stop Frame Animation

In this exciting unit, we’ll delve deeper into the design process, learn story-boarding techniques, and experience planning and art-direction. We will engage with a range of ideas from modern contexts including comic books, first designing an animation plan in a comic book style. We’ll learn to recognise the varied characteristics of different animation techniques. Finally, working in groups, we’ll create of a series of animated clips. By the end of this unit, we will have gained a deeper understanding of different roles within in film and have taken responsibility for planning, working within a timeline, managing a group project, and new film editing techniques.

Research, Storyboards and Planning

Self Portraits

We’ll explore the theme of self-portraiture. Using photographs and mirrors, we’ll develop a series of self-portraits that focus on realistic technique through a range of media including pencil, ink, chalk pastel, collage and paint. Furthermore, we’ll study the self-portraits of artists Durer, Rembrandt, Kirchner, Van Gogh, Kahlo, Magritte and Warhol analyzing techniques, modes of expression and use of symbolism to convey meaning. We’ll practice drawing portrait features, proportion techniques, and the grid method of enlargement. Confronting common misconceptions, the aim will be to improving observation skills, become more aware of concepts conveyed through art, and reflective and evaluative writing about artwork.

Bag for Life

We will research textile artists and textiles from cultures around the world, examining how different cultures create and use textiles, and the function of design, images, colour pattern in different cultures. We'll explore roles that we play in our daily lives and develop designs for the fabric print and the bag itself through mind-mapping and exploration of symbolic images, colours and techniques. We’ll learn and experiment with wax relief, painting with fabric dye and stitching techniques. We will create a design plan for a “Bag for Life,” indicating the bag’s very specific purpose and function. We’ll apply all techniques to make the "bag for life".
